So what's our mischief for today?

What do I do all day?

Well, you probably already know that if I can drag myself out of bed before the kids, my day is off to a unique start. After getting Iain's boundless energy off to school and trying to head off the Dragon Ladies (Aspen's) latest set of demands, I head in to Tech4Learning where I develop curriculum and media, organize professional development, blog, tweet, update our website, create resource kits, and more.

My first love at work though is probably Creative Educator! I think this magazine, and now web site has kept me inspired since 2007! If you are ever interested in sharing a classroom story there, let me know!

Need ideas and resources for writing a grant?

Posted on March 10, 2014 at 9:49am 0 Comments

Lately, it doesn't seem like there is much loose change around for teachers looking to implement innovative projects in their classroom. While there are lots of grants, there is also a lot of competition for them. The same is true for Donors Choose.…

Using Special Characters in Tech4Learning Tools

Q. Can students type in other languages in Pixie? (or Wixie or Frames or Share)? Especially when the languages use non-Latin characters?

A. Yes!

But, of course, this isn't an easy answer and varies depending on your hardware and operating system. For example, you can change your operating system to display in another language. You can also attach a keyboard that is set up for another language. These mean that there are lots of variations out there.

Bring the excitement of Pixie home for the holidays

Posted on November 18, 2013 at 4:25pm 0 Comments

It must be getting to that time... I am starting to get lots of emails about how parents can purchase Pixie at home for their child.

I've included some links below and you can also download the Take Pixie Home for the Holidays - Brochure that includes links to the Home Edition, the apps for iPad, Android, and Kindle, as well as the parent…

Personalizing Learning

Posted on October 18, 2013 at 4:00pm 1 Comment

While I think differentiation is great, I am not a fan of individualization, and now comes personalization! In most of what I read, I think there is way too much talk about personalization, that is individualization in disguise. So what's the difference?

I think you can tell personalization apart from individualization simply by looking to see if student learning involves options. Individualized learning is all too often a specific set of instructional resources someone else…

Connected Learning

I recently was reintroduced to Mozilla Thimble, which essentially encourages you to use HTML to "Make something amazing with the web!" Because I was making something (one of the open-source shared projects), I spent way too much time playing in different projects, like this one!

In this case, the template was a London Tube style map you can customize with events from your life. I thought this would make a fun…

Yep, totally! I have two more weeks left and then I'll be finished with my second masters. I'm looking forward to a breather! Wrapping up my thesis right now! I'm so looking forward to seeing you all in March for delicious Arabic food...oh yeah, and the conference, too. ;)

NYSCATE was a lot of fun. I'm probably going to do the same presentation with some new student material at NYSCATE Metro. We're going to do a pilot on animation with a few classes after the new year. Winnie spoke to Denise about it. I have a great K-8 school in mind with a very progressive principal who will be happy to have a couple of her classes participate. I'm looking forward to having some kids to work with for a while. :D
If I don't touch bases with you before, have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year!

The picture is from a holiday trip to sunny Mexico-THAT'S why I look so relaxed and happy! You should see me now...

I had the Quicktime of the movie on my desktop, and clicked on "add a file." I couldn't figure out how to do it so it would show up-I can change it if you give me directions.

I expect a new picture from time to time. The Mr. T one won't work, so get creative.

You're too cute! Actually this winter I'm working on renewing my National Board certificate, so I have my hands full and need to film a great math lesson before I go off in less than 3 weeks. I'm working with the kids on a delightful Pixie movie of Paul Revere that goes with our Communication ESL unit and will have fun sharing it with you in the spring. You're my greatest fan! :)

Thanks Lindie. It's so cold in MI. We have -10 degrees this morning with lots of districts closed. I'm not sure how much I'll get on this site as I'm not very good with committing time for these wonderful social networking sites, but I figured the first step was to join. Have a good weekend.
